Why You Need to Get Rid of Cloth Wiring in Your Home

As a society, the way we have done things has consistently evolved throughout the years, as technology, safety, and science evolves. One of those things is how we handle electricity within our homes. Join us as we go over the historic uses of cloth wiring and why it’s no longer considered an industry standard, but rather a hazard, in today's society.

What is cloth wiring?

Made popular between the 1920’s and 1950’s, cloth wiring was considered the wiring standard that accompanied the once popular knob and tube system. This form of installing electricity remained popular until the 1960’s where it was replaced by more modern systems.

Why did cloth wiring stop being used?

It may come as no surprise to learn that combining the flammable nature of cloth with the reactive potential of an electrical current carried through wire mesh is not the best idea. As humans began to modernize their equipment, it was determined that this type of electrical wire system was not only unsafe, but also unable to support the demand in the growing world of appliances.

Are there different types of cloth wiring?

While knob and tube wiring is probably the most frequently discussed variation, there are a few others to be aware of, especially for older homes.

  • BX Wiring:  Copper wires insulated with cloth and covered with metal sheath

  • Non Metallic Wiring: Similar to BX Wiring, but instead of a metallic sheath, the wiring is encased in a plastic covering

Why should cloth wiring be replaced?

Briefly alluded to earlier in the article, there are a few reasons why cloth wiring is no longer used within the electrical industry. From fire hazards to denied homeowners insurance, we’ve laid out the common issues and concerns that homeowners and professionals alike have with cloth wiring systems.

The material is brittle which creates wear and tear

Unfortunately, this method of wiring a home has shown that it does not age well as time passes. These materials become brittle and break down over the span of a few years, leaving homeowners with a faulty and unsafe electrical situation

Cloth wiring can contain asbestos

Most of us have already been made familiar with the threat of asbestos. Although asbestos is an effective and efficient way of insulating homes and equipment, it was discovered to have a significant negative impact on the health and wellness of those exposed to it. As these discoveries were made, manufacturers were quick to discontinue the use of asbestos and switch to safer alternatives.

Insects and rodents can cause damage easily

In addition to health concerns, cloth wiring has also been found to be an easy target to both insects and rodents alike. Even if your cloth wiring system is currently functioning as you anticipated, it can easily be destroyed by unwelcome guests down the line.

Heat isn’t insulated as well in cloth wiring

Times have changed and with it have come safer, more effective means of insulating your wiring. Failing to replace cloth wiring could jeopardize the safety of both your home and your family.

Common concerns of cloth wiring

Thankfully cloth wiring has been phased out of most living situations, but if you’re not quite sure how to proceed, we’ve outlined some frequently asked questions to help guide you through the process.

How do you find cloth wiring?

Visually inspecting your home for cloth wiring can be tricky! Your best bet is to call an electrician so that they can inspect all areas of your home for the presence of cloth wiring.

How much is it to replace cloth wiring?

The cost associated with replacing cloth wiring is going to be dependent on the size of the home and the amount of wiring needing to be replaced. Regardless of the total cost, the rewiring process should be seen as an investment into your home and the safety of your family. It pays off in the long run!
